It’s Leap Day, a day that occurs like clockwork every four years on the Julian calendar. Isn’t it wonderful to have an extra day this year?
This month’s recap post is pretty short, and I have no images to show. Why? Well, as I mentioned in a post just a couple of weeks ago, the winter months are my least favorite months for photography. And, of those winter months, February is probably my least productive month. By the time February arrives, I am usually mentally drained after spending December and January struggling to find photographic subjects. This February has been no different. While I made a couple of outings, I hardly took my camera out of the bag. Those rare times when I did, the results were. . .disappointing to say the least.
ON LOCATION
At the beginning of the month, I made a trip to Pinnacle Mountain State Park. I’ve never produced what I would consider very good images at Pinnacle as I always struggle to find a compelling subject, and this time was really no different. I did find and photograph a small pine cone lying on the ground that was in pristine condition, but when I got home and looked at it on the big monitor, it was rather “bleh” and had some sharpness issues I hadn’t noticed on the back of the camera. Fortunately, the weather was pretty nice, and I still enjoyed the time outdoors, which I guess is what really matters.
I made a second trip in the middle of the month and visited the very, very small town of Keo. Keo is known for three things: pecan orchards, antiques, and a small restaurant called “Charlotte’s Eats and Sweets” that serves some of the best homemade pies you will find anywhere. Unfortunately, since it was an early Saturday morning, the restaurant was closed, so I couldn’t stop for any eats or sweets. I just drove around trying to find something worth photographing, but, again, I was struggling to really see anything. I finally found a small group of what appeared to be fallen acorns that I liked and photographed them. But, when I reviewed the image when I got home, I wasn’t so sure about it. Frankly, the jury is still out on that image. I’ll take another look at it in a couple of days and decide, but I’m afraid the verdict will be less than satisfactory.
As I look around now, though, I’m beginning to see some signs that Spring is on the horizon, so I’m expecting next month to be a much more productive month than February has been.
