This is a very unusual picture for me because I made this image using the camera on my phone rather than my typical camera equipment. I noticed the interesting patterns on the tree trunks that lined the parking lot of a conference I was attending last week. Knowing neither the weather nor my schedule would allow for any photographic endeavors, I left my dSLR at home. My only option to photograph these patterns was to use the camera on my phone.
My experience with phone cameras from years ago was the cameras produced very poor quality images. Based on this, I rarely used my phone for photography other the quick snapshot every once in a while. I would never use it for any kind of “serious” photography.
Reviewing the images on my computer, I was somewhat disappointed although not surprised to find the edges were soft because of the camera’s large fixed f1.7 aperture. Despite that, however, I was absolutely amazed at the overall quality of the images.
My dSLR certainly provides more flexibility and capability, and my phone camera will never replace it. However, I feel more confident about using my phone camera to make photographs in those situations where my dSLR is not available.
Another photographer whose blog posts I read frequently likes to comment about what a great time it is, with all the technological advancements, to be a photographer. I couldn’t agree with him more!
