If you like photographing abstract patterns, abandoned buildings can provide some fantastic opportunities. Rust patterns and peeling paint, among other interesting things, are some of the great photographic subjects you can find in an old building. Driving around the small town of Keo, Arkansas, I came across an old abandoned church. I decided to go inside and see what I could find. Carefully walking around the old church, I came upon this door. I was intrigued with the design in the door knob and the patterns in the cracking paint. The light level was too low for me to handhold my camera, which I would have preferred, without using an unacceptably high ISO. Mounting the camera on my tripod eliminated that concern. To ensure complete depth of field, I positioned the back of the camera as close to parallel with the door as I could and then selected the smallest lens aperture to compensate for any variance. Since the camera was on a tripod, I could use a low ISO to minimize digital noise and let the shutter speed fall where it may.
