Mud and Photographic Vision

Designs in cracked mud

Coming home from a weekend trip a few years ago, my wife and I stopped at the Tyler Bend Visitor Center on the Buffalo National River just north of Marshall, Arkansas, to let our dog get out and stretch his legs a little bit. Walking down to the river, I noticed an area of dried cracked mud. At first, I ignored it and continued walking. But, after taking a couple of steps, I decided to stop and take a closer look. Standing over the dried mud, I began to see how the cracks created a beautiful abstract design. Handholding the camera, I moved around the patch of mud until I was able to find this section of mud that had both an intricate pattern of racks and little debris stuck in it. Mounting my camera on a tripod, I adjusted the focal length of the lens until it framed the exact section I wanted to photograph. My settings were 84mm, 1/60 sec, f/22, and 200 ISO.
