Moonset

This image is actually a composite of a shot I took from the Two Rivers Bridge early in the morning just before sunrise and a picture of the moon from another time. In the original photo, the moon was significantly brighter than the rest of the scene, so I had a decision to make regarding exposure. I could expose for the moon and let everything else go dark. I could expose for the surrounding scene and let the moon become overexposed. Or, I could use the HDR technique. In this case, I felt the best option was to expose for the surrounding scene and overexpose the moon. Overexposed highlights typically ruin a photograph, so why did I make this decision? Because I could use Photoshop to replace the overexposed moon. The replacement process was relatively straight forward, but it took a little trial and error to get the final image looking in line with what I actually saw.  My settings for the original photograph were 55mm, 2.5 sec, f/11, 200 ISO.
