Looking Back: May 2014

It’s the middle of May, which means it’s time for another look back at some of the images I made this month in 2014.

The first image is a waterfall created by a natural dam that traverses the width of Mountain Fork Creek.  It is so perfectly formed that it appears to be man-made, but it really is a naturally formed dam.  The dam is very easy to get to, which makes it a big attraction for the locals to come play in the water.

I made this image one evening after work.  What really drew my attention was the contrast between the cool blue tones in the water and the warmer yellow tones of the sunlight on the trees in the background.  Of course, that contrast created a rather tricky exposure situation, but that was easily handled with some processing adjustments.

While searching Google one night for places to photograph, I found pictures of a tree-lined road, known locally as Pecan Alley, that wasn’t too far from my house.  I have always been fascinated with roads and streets that are lined by trees that overhang the roadway because they seem so peaceful and soothing to me.  After a couple of weeks and a few trips to the area, I finally found the section of road I had been searching for, and it was simply amazing.  The trees were in full bloom, and I was literally standing in a tunnel of trees.

After getting my photograph of Pecan Alley, I was packing everything up and getting ready to leave when I happened to notice this center-pivot irrigator in the middle of the field next to the road.  This is not a subject I would normally consider photographing (shame on me!) perhaps because I would typically see something like this in the middle of the day in less than ideal lighting.  But, the scene with the empty field and the early morning sun peeking out from behind some clouds caught my eye.  I quickly pulled my gear back out and set up this composition.
