It’s easy to get caught up with the idea that the only way to get great pictures is to find great locations. A great location is certainly helpful in creating amazing photographs, but what is very often overlooked is how important the lighting is to creating those stunning pictures. Poor lighting can make a great location look mundane. But, great lighting can often make a mundane location look spectacular. This picture of a crop irrigator is an example of how light can have a significant influence on your image. I’ve scene irrigators many times before, and I have never found them to be all that interesting from a photographic standpoint. But, when I shot this, it was early morning, and the sun was low in the sky. The low angled lighting created some beautiful edge lighting on the irrigator and provided a sense of early morning peacefulness. This photograph did not happen because I was in some exotic, far away location. I was able to make this picture because the lighting was perfect. Photography is all about the lighting. My settings were 200mm, 1/13 sec, f/32, 200 ISO.
