I took this shot several years ago along the banks of the Arkansas River. I had arrived at the location with some ideas of what I wanted to photograph. However, the morning turned out to be very cloudy, which was not conducive to any of the photographic ideas I had been planning.
I wandered around for some time trying to find something to photograph, but nothing was catching my eye. Deciding it was time to pack it in and call it a day, I started noticing the very rocks I was walking on. I began to see that some of them contained various colors that were so light and so subtle as to be almost indiscernible.
I began shooting different patterns of rocks. Even though I could just barely make out some of the different hues of color, I had no way of knowing exactly what I would get in the final images.
When I got home, I downloaded the images to my computer and opened the files. Increasing the vibrance and saturation of the photos, I found that some of the rocks had amazing color, while others didn’t. Nonetheless, every image was a surprise because I didn’t know what would be revealed until I made the adjustments.
