It is often believed that a bright sunny day provides the best type of lighting for outdoor photography. However, such lighting often creates two issues: extreme contrast that is beyond the ability of camera sensors to handle and colors that often appear washed out and faded. HDR is one option that can be used to deal with contrast extremes. But, the option I prefer whenever the opportunity presents itself is to photograph when the sky is overcast. When I shot this image of the Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas, the cloudy sky provided soft, even lighting that eliminated any contrast issues and allowed for richer, more vibrant colors. My settings were 32mm, 0.6 sec., f/22, 200 ISO.
